We opted for a shorter drive day so we could hit the VLA and do some overlanding. This was a good call.
Made it to the hotel in Ros well at about 11. Nineish hour drive tomorrow, 100% highway.

The VLA is always a good stop if you’re in that part of NM.

Hwy 60 between Magdalena and Datil may or may not be an excellent section of road to hit a ton. Right after the only state patrolman in the area has passed one going in the opposite direction.
Theoretically, of course...

When I lived in the area, there was no regular State Police presence in the area at all. Unless they were responding to a call for service or investigating something, they weren’t out there. Now there is a substation out in Quemado. So far as I know, Socorro County still doesn’t patrol out past Magdalena. They only head out there if they have a specific reason to do so.

Oh man that would have been good to know! We saw a HUGE speed trap right as we entered NM from Texas, so we were pretty strict about speed limits while we were there.... which SUCKED because the speed limits in NM are soooooo loooooooooooooow.
